It was rather reminiscent of the old Beyond the Fringe sketch in which a hapless young man is told by his commanding officer “The time has come for a useless sacrifice. We have chosen you” – and not at all the conventional treatment for the Chief of Imperial General Staff.

* On another occasion de Gaulle referred to Macmillan as “ce vieillard lachrymose”. The Prime Minister squeezed a tear and impressed the young and naïve like Kennedy or the sentimental and class-ridden British television viewer, but it was not an effect which worked on everyone.

* The row simmered on, mainly between Berlin and Bonn. On 20 October the FRG affirmed the right to hold a Bundestag meeting in Berlin but postponed fixing a date. In the event, the next session in the western sectors was to be in 1965.
